Testing POP3 Using a Telnet Session

To test a pop3 server, using telnet, follow these steps:

1) telnet to port 110 of the server you wish to test.

# telnet servername 110

The remote server should respond similar to this:

Connected to servername.domain.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Dovecot ready.

2) Issue the USER command.

USER username

The remote server should respond similar to this:

+OK

3) Issue the PASS command for the username you previously gave.

PASS password

The remote server should respond similar to this:

+OK Logged in.

4) Use the STAT command to check the existance of messages in the mailbox.

STAT

The remote server should respond like this:

+OK 0 0

5) Use the LIST command to see the messages information.

LIST

The remote server should respond similar to this:

+OK 0 messages:

6) End your session with QUIT

QUIT
+OK Logging out.
